Book review: Terrific Tongues, by Maria Gianferrari, illustrated by Jia Liu

Gianferrari, Maria. Illustrated by Jia Liu. Terrific Tongues. Boyds Mills Press, 2018. $17.95. ISBN 9781620917848. Unp. Ages 4-8. P7 Q8

Terrific Tongues explains the various types of tongues and the many purposes behind their unique designs. We follow a monkey as it assumes each type of tongue and exemplifies its targeted use. Liu’s playful illustrations represent the tongues as tools, helping each animal to catch prey, clean themselves, and even regulate their body temperatures.  As we learn about tongues, we also learn about the animals as a whole.

Verdict: This book accurately demonstrates the diverse qualities of tongues found in nature. It will be an approachable accompaniment to a lesson about biodiversity or evolution.
