Book reviews: Who Was That?, by Olivier Tallec

Tallec, Olivier. Who Was That? Chronicle Books, 2018. Unpaged. $15.99. ISBN 9781452169903. Ages 4-7. P7Q6.

This is a book that asks you to test your memory. Each spread has a simple illustration of a group of characters doing various things. You’re asked do follow directions, and then test your memory about what you saw. I like the illustrations style- it’s understated, bright and funny, and kids will enjoy the characters as well as the memory challenges presented. The size of the book is unusual- it measures 11.5” wide and 5.5” high. This is kind of a fun size and shape and allows for strings of characters to play across the spread, but I worry that the binding may not be strong enough to last very long in a public library.

VERDICT: Young readers will like the unusual format of the book as well as the memory tasks. It will be a fun read for a parent and young child.
