Book review: Magic Spell, by Julie Paschkis

Paschkis, Julie. Magic Spell. Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2017. $17.99. ISBN 9781481422109. Unpaged. Ages 5-10. P7 Q6

The magician Aziz and his assistant Zaza perform a magic show.  The story engages the reader using many literary devices.  The magic words turn items into another rhyming word or change the middle vowel to make other new words.  Using lots of word play and magical words, it is a fun read.  The illustrations have lots of movement with the dark bolded lines that move around the pages.  It has a creative feel to the book.  There is not much of a story, but has more silly magic than anything.  Verdict: It is a fun book with word play.
