Book review: Ogres Awake!, by James Sturm, Andrew Arnold, and Alexis Frederick-Frost

Sturm, James, Andrew Arnold, and Alexis Frederick-Frost. Ogres Awake! (Adventures in Cartooning series) First Second, 2016. $14.99. ISBN 9781596436534. Unp.  Ages 6-10. P9 Q9

In this simple graphic novel, a knight and her horse are worried about the ogres sleeping on her doorstep and are about to wake up. Afraid they will attack the kingdom, the knight warns the king who prepares a sweet potato stew instead of declaring war. Gnomes and wizards help the knight peel potatoes and carrots from the king’s garden. The end papers give steps drawing the characters.

Verdict: The book has a useful message of solving a problem and showing kindness instead of fighting.

January 2017 review by Deborah Gwynn.

[Editor’s note: The knight and her horse reappear from earlier appearances in the Adventures in Cartooning series.]
