Book reviews: The Way Home in the Night, by Aikio Miyakoshi

Miyakoshi, Aikio. The Way Home in the Night. Kids Can Press, 2017. $16.95. unp. ISBN 978-1-77138-663-0. Ages 3-7. P8Q8

Dark pencil, charcoal, and acrylic gouache touched with bits of yellow for lights and a pink shirt on the toddler bunny give the feeling of a film as mother bunny carries her child home through the night streets. The little bunny narrator notes occurrences that he sees through the windows—a pie pulled from the oven, a party ending, etc.—and imagines what occurs after these events. Father lovingly tucks in his child, making this a great goodnight story.

Verdict: Rounded panels surrounded by white mesh with other illustrations bleeding off the page providing the bunny’s perspective offer diversity in the timeless peacefulness by an award-winning Japanese author/illustrator.
