The excitement of John F. Kennedy’s visit to his ancestral Ireland a few months before he was assassinated is highlighted through the eyes of a fictional schoolboy, Patrick, who succeeds in his wildest dreams, that of meeting the great man. Based on the author’s 2011 book for adults, JFK in Ireland: Four Days that Changed a President, Tubridy’s first picture book recreates the era with packed crowds, excited children, and Kennedy himself as Patrick cuts up a Swiss roll and hands it to him. Lynch’s lifelike watercolors illuminate the pride of the people in their connection with the first Catholic president of the United States and the nation’s overcoming more of the prejudice against the Irish.
