Book review: Leave Me Alone!, by Vera Brosgol

Brosgol, Vera. Leave Me Alone! Roaring Brook Press, 2016. $17.99. ISBN 9781626724419. Unpaged. Ages 4-7. P8Q8

brosgol-leave-me-aloneYoung readers will love this modern folk story about a grandmother who tries to knit winter sweaters for her many grandchildren. They won’t leave her alone! She finally gets fed up and leaves, trying to find some peace and quiet. On her journey, she encounters bears, goats, and moon-men who are as pesky as her grandchildren. Finally, she goes through a worm hole and gets her knitting done. Once the job is done, she packs up and goes home to her family. Kids will enjoy the humorous illustrations- Brosgol has a real knack for communicating emotion in the faces of her characters. I think this would work very well as a book for storytime- there is a good rhythm to the story, and adults will identify with the need for peace and quiet when surrounded by a crowd of children!

VERDICT: A fun, cheerful read that will be enjoyed by all.
