Book review: The Tick-Tock Man, by Kersten Hamilton, with illustrations by James Hamilton

Kersten Hamilton.  The Tick-Tock Man. With illustrations by James Hamilton. (Gadgets and Gears series, #3) Clarion Books, 2016. $16.99. ISBN 978-0-544-43300-7. 130 p. Gr. 2 – 5. P8Q8

hamilton-tick-tock-manThis is the third book in the Gadgets and Gears series.  Wally and his sleuthing pal, Noodles, his dachshund, meet Sherlock Holmes and together work to solve a mystery and save a young girl’s life.

Verdict: Hamilton does a deft job of making the reader understand the characters that were established in the first two books.  The setting has a cool steam punk vibe that isn’t quite as dark as other steam punk fiction.  The limited number of illustrations by James Hamilton add a cartoon and Victorian era feel to the novel.
