Book review: The Infamous Ratsos, by Kara LaReau, illustrated by Matt Myers

LaReau, Kara. The Infamous Ratsos. Illustrated by Matt Myers. Candlewick Press, 2016. $14.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-7636-0. 57 p. Gr. 2 – 4. P7Q8

lareau-infamous-ratsosLouis and Ralphie Ratso are intent on being just like their father: tough.  Every trouble-filled caper they execute backfires and is perceived as a nice deed.  The brothers become increasingly determined to be thugs and finally bring their problem to their father who softens and shows them being tough is not all it appears.

Verdict: The situations are ripe with irony.  Though this is a book geared for 5- to 8-year-olds, I can see how a teacher of different grades might use it to illustrate irony.  The illustrations by Matt Myers enhance the enjoyment of the text.  They capture a mood and levitate the story with a greater sense of playfulness.
