Book review: Slingshot and Burp, by Richard Haynes, illustrated by Stephen Gilpin

Richard Haynes. Slingshot and Burp. Illustrated by Stephen Gilpin. Candlewick Press, 2016. $14.99. ISBN 978-0-76367076-4. 101 p. Gr. 1 – 3. P7Q8

haynes-slingshot-and-burpSlingshot and Burp are neighbors, cousins, best friends, and two modern-day cowboys who live on the edge of a desert and ride their bikes which they refer to as their horses.  Big Jim, their mentor in the cowboy life, tells them about possible treasure and a skeleton in “The Big Empty” and the two cow-hands set off on an adventure to find them.

Verdict: The writing is absolutely delightful.  When the two are grounded for causing mischief, Haynes maintains voice and the characters refer to going to Mom and Dad court where they are sentenced to two days in lock up.  Illustrations by Stephen Gilpin appear on about 25% of the pages and enhance a reader’s understanding of the text.  This is an engaging book.
