Sidman, Joyce. Before morning. illus. Beth Krommes. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016. unp. $17.99. ISBN:  978-0-547-97917-5. Gr. 1+. P8 Q10

sidman-before-morningThis visually stunning book is about a child, a mother and family who all wish that they could spend more time together. The simple rhyming text flows from page to page. The detailed scratchboard and watercolor illustrations carry the very simple text. The words and illustrations are so compatible it is as if the illustrator and author are one and the same.

Verdict: Every school and public library should have a copy of this book that could be used in so many different subject areas, such as  poetry, art, weather and also in a counseling center.

November 2016 review by Carol Bernardi.

[Editor’s note: Subtly detailed scratchboard illustrations show a mother and child walking home through a wintry city. As the mother gets ready to leave for her early morning job, the child wishes for a show day, a family day when her mother can spend time at home with the family.]
