Book review: S.E.X. The All You Need to Know Sexuality Guide to Get You Through Your Teens and Twenties, 2nd edition, by Heather Corinna

Corrina, Heather. S.E.X. The All You Need to Know Sexuality Guide to Get You Through Your Teens and Twenties. Da Capo, 2016 (2nd edition). $17.99. ISBN 9780738218847. 462 pgs. Ages 15-25.  P8Q9

corinna-sexI think this is the most comprehensive, honest sex-ed book I have ever seen. The author aims to present “accurate, explicit, accessible, and non-judgmental sexuality information that respects young people and their capabilities.” Her approach is very progressive and doesn’t pull any punches in delving into important topics in a way that represents the diversity of people’s lives and experiences. She uses humor to deal with important issues- I like the section entitled, “Top Ten Really Crappy Reasons to Have (Any Sort of) Sex with Someone Else.” A major focus is maintaining good physical, mental and emotional health in relation to sex. The scope of the book is huge- Corrina looks at the topics of consent, coercion, abuse, sexual orientation, reproductive biology, dealing with relationships, birth control methods, pregnancy, etc. Parents will find the book helpful too- there are tips for talking to teens about sex in a way that is respectful and supportive.

Verdict:  I think all public and high school libraries should have this excellent resource.
