Corrina, Heather. S.E.X. The All You Need to Know Sexuality Guide to Get You Through Your Teens and Twenties. Da Capo, 2016 (2nd edition). $17.99. ISBN 9780738218847. 462 pgs. Ages 15-25. P8Q9
I think this is the most comprehensive, honest sex-ed book I have ever seen. The author aims to present “accurate, explicit, accessible, and non-judgmental sexuality information that respects young people and their capabilities.” Her approach is very progressive and doesn’t pull any punches in delving into important topics in a way that represents the diversity of people’s lives and experiences. She uses humor to deal with important issues- I like the section entitled, “Top Ten Really Crappy Reasons to Have (Any Sort of) Sex with Someone Else.” A major focus is maintaining good physical, mental and emotional health in relation to sex. The scope of the book is huge- Corrina looks at the topics of consent, coercion, abuse, sexual orientation, reproductive biology, dealing with relationships, birth control methods, pregnancy, etc. Parents will find the book helpful too- there are tips for talking to teens about sex in a way that is respectful and supportive.
Verdict: I think all public and high school libraries should have this excellent resource.
