Book review: Toby, by Hazel Mitchell

Mitchell, Hazel. Toby. Candlewick, 2016. $16.99. 40p. ISBN 9780763680930. Ages 4-6. P8Q8

mitchell-tobyA boy’s father consents to getting a dog, and the child picks a distressed-looking dog that wets the floor, runs from a cat, damages flowers in the yard, and does other puppy damage. The boy cleans up after him and finally has the chance to praise Toby for finding a missing shoe. The boy is the narrator of the simple tale, and subdued watercolor wash tints pencil drawings. A delightful read for a child who may also feel insecure.
