Book review: Look Up!, by Jung Jin-Ho

Jin-Ho, Jung. Look Up! Holiday House, 2016. $16.95. 32p. ISBN 978-0-8234-3652-1. Ages 5-8. P9Q9

jinho-look-upThe book is all about perspective as a girl in a wheelchair looks down from her balcony onto the street far below. No one notices her—pictured only with her feet and hands, the top of her head, and her nose—until the boy below looks up at her. To see her better, he lies down and convinces others to join him. As they exchange looks, the black, white, and gray drawings being to have color in the treetops and a tiny plant in a pot. Childish illustrations—for example, the faces lack eyes—are charming, and allow the reader to focus on other elements. A companion to this concept book would be Wenzel’s They All Saw a Cat. Look Up! was awarded an Opera Prima Honor at the Bologna Book Fair.
