Book review: I Love Cake, Starring Rabbit, Porcupine, and Moose, by Tammi Sauer, illustrated by Angie Rozelaar

Sauer, Tammi. Illustrated by Angie Rozelaar. I Love Cake, Starring Rabbit, Porcupine, and Moose. Katherine Tegen Books/Harper Collins Publishers, 2016 $17.99. ISBN 9780062278944. Unp. Ages 4-8. P6Q6

sauer-i-love-cakeIt is Rabbit’s birthday and she has invited her two best friends over for a party. Rabbit, Moose, and Porcupine each have their own personalities. Rabbit loves being the boss, Porcupine loves to have fun, and Moose…loves cake. So, when the birthday cake goes missing at Rabbit’s party, the mystery is solved rather quickly. Moose, whose lines are best read in the voice of Bullwinkle, is a tad too goofy. While the message to value others and share is a good one, few things about the book stand out. The illustrations are colorful, two-dimensional, and cartoony. The text is mostly dialogue between the characters which is most appropriately read aloud.
