Book review: Hooray for Today!, by Brian Won

Won, Brian. Hooray for Today! Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2016. Unpaged. $16.99. ISBN 9780544748033. Ages 4-8. P8Q9

won-hoorayOwl is excited to play with his friends. He goes to his different friends of Elephant, Zebra, Turtle, Giraffe, and Lion. None of them want to play; they all want to sleep. He is so disappointed that he finally goes home to sleep. And his friends are there and ready to play now that it is morning, but he is not ready to play because he is tired. Finally, they all get to play and are excited for today. Verdict: It is definitely for a primary level and provides a good discussion about why his friends don’t want to play, but sleep. It is a fun bedtime story.

November 2016 review by Deborah Gwynn.

Editor’s note: Bright, intense colors bring the story of Owl, awake and ready to play with friends as the moon rises, to life. Unfortunately for Owl, his friends sleep during nighttime hours and, in the morning, they wake up ready to play, but Owl is tired. The juxtaposition of the simple, brightly colored illustrations with the repeated responses of the sleepy animals makes this a cute bedtime story for preschool children and their parents.
