Book review: The Super-Smelly Moldy Blob, by Amy Marie Stadelmann

Stadelmann, Amy Marie. The Super-Smelly Moldy Blob. (Olive & Beatrix series ; Branches series.) Scholastic, 2015. $15.99. 72 pages. ISBN 9780545814850. Grades 1-3. P8 Q7

Stadelmann Smelly BlobThe Super-Smelly Moldy Blob is the second early chapter book in the Olive and Beatrix series. Eddie, Beatrix, and Olive are very competitive when it comes to their school’s science fair. Each of them has designed a project that is sure to win the blue ribbon. Beatrix, who always wins because she is a witch, always brings the same project. This time, however, while fighting over the table closest the judges, the two girls’ projects collide and create a giant fungus monster.  The three kids are then tasked with conquering the blob before it destroys the whole school. The Super-Smelly Moldy Blob is written in the same graphic novel style with chapters as the first book in the series. Stadelmann has included more colors in her illustrations, yet they are still in the same muted family. It is clear that the themes in each book of the series will remain similar—negotiating differences to overcome common problems. Each unique supernatural problem will appeal to young readers, making the series a successful introduction to chapter books.
