Book review: If You Plant a Seed, by Kadir Nelson

Nelson, Kadir. If You Plant a Seed. Balzer + Bray, 2015. $18.99. ISBN 9780062298898. Unpaged. Ages 4-8. P8Q9.

Nelson If You Plant a SeedI think this beautiful book will become a favorite of both parents and children at my library. The rabbit and mouse work hard to plant a garden and are rewarded with a bountiful harvest. Neighborhood animals watch with interest, but Rabbit and Mouse are selfish and don’t want to share. They find that like the seeds, which grew because of care and love, selfishness can also grow into something ugly. The situation is resolved and through kindness and generosity, a nice relationship is built among all the animals. I love this message, and the very simple telling of the story along with the beautiful illustrations convey it very well. The paintings are oil on canvas, and show details very well. I highly recommend this for public and school libraries.
