Book review: The Scandal, by John Grisham

Grisham, John. The Scandal. [Theodore Boone series, book 6]. Dutton. 2016. $17.99. 224p. ISBN 978-0-525426-39-4. Ages 9-12. P7Q7

Grisham ScandalThe 13-year-old son of two lawyers continues his pursuit of the law in the sixth book of the series as he finds himself embroiled in the issue of school standardized testing. The decision of his best friend, April, to blow the whistle on teachers at another school in the district who are changing answers on these test to make their students look better brings up both sides of the testing issue. The legal question Grisham addresses is whether this act is a crime, as shown in a court case when Theo’s mother defends the teachers. The book is somewhat simple, and Theo is not very well fleshed out. Yet the mystery is a fast read and will engage those interested in middle-school problems and the judicial process.
