Book review: Beastly Babies, by Ellen Jackson, illustrated by Brendan Wenzel

Jackson, Ellen. Illustrated by Brendan Wenzel. Beastly Babies. Beach Lane Books/Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division, 2015. $17.99. ISBN 9781442408340. Unp. Ages 2-6. P7 Q7.

Jackson Beastly BabiesBeastly Babies discusses the behavior and appearance of various babies that can be found in nature. Through wacky, crowded illustrations, we discover that baby birds love slugs, baby elephants are rambunctious, and while some animals have many babies, others only have one. The text rhymes and describes a variety of animals from pigs to dromedaries. It depicts babies learning from their parents, nesting, and eating. Ultimately, despite their current dependency, each baby will grow up to have babies of their own who will learn and act similarly. Beastly Babies is a fun read for young animal lovers as they learn about nature’s diverse creatures.
