Book review: Absolutely One Thing, by Lauren Child

Child, Lauren. Absolutely One Thing: Featuring Charlie and Lola. Candlewick Press, 2016. $17.99. ISBN 9789763687281. Unp. Ages 2-5. P8 Q8

Child Absolutely One ThingIn Absolutely One Thing we are joined by Charlie and Lola as they walk to the store with their mom. It is an adventure driven by numbers. The siblings find numbers in everything from counting ladybug socks to telling time and inventing their own numbers to describe just how many leaves are on the trees—a squillion. Lauren Child includes mathematical operations like addition, subtraction, and division to demonstrate how math can answer everyday questions. The numbers and text in this book swirl around the page, becoming part of Child’s characteristic illustrations. Charlie and Lola’s familiar faces and youthful curiously prove that numbers aren’t scary—they help us learn, stay on time, and solve problems.
