Burks, James. Bird & Squirrel On the Edge! (Bird & Squirrel series, #3). Graphix/Scholastic, 2015. $11.99. ISBN 978-0-545-80426-4. 141 pages. Ages 4-10. P9Q8
Bird and Squirrel are on their way home. The only thing left to do is to cross the Great Mountains. Well, the pair encounter a bear cub in trouble. Bird has a courageous personality and steps in to rescue the cub. Squirrel is reluctant and fearful yet participates by throwing pinecones. Ultimately, Bird is injured in the ordeal by a mighty blow to the head from none other than Squirrel. Bird’s injury renders him without a memory. Now Squirrel needs to overcome his fear to protect Bird and the cub as they continue the trek through the woods and mountains. Bird remembers he can fly and that he loves Squirrel when he is needed most. The hilarious colorful pictures complement the text beautifully. I continue to laugh out loud at Bird’s response to the mother bear reuniting with her baby. This story is sure to entice children to continue turning its pages.
