Book review: Miss Hazeltine’s Home for Shy and Fearful Cats, by Alicia Potter, illustrated by Birgitta Sif

Potter, Alicia. Miss Hazeltine’s Home for Shy and Fearful Cats. illus. Birgitta Sif. Alfred A. Knopf, 2015. unp. $16.99. ISBN:978-0-385-75334-0. Gr. 2+. P8 Q8

Potter Miss HazeltineCat lovers beware, let this book be a warning to those who love cats that wanting is sometimes more than you can handle. Miss Hazeltine opens a school to help those unfortunate cats who are scared of mice, birds, or maybe a broom. Her cat, Crumb is scared of all this and she is determined to help him and the others. Soon the word is out and more and more and more cats arrive. When she runs out of milk and has an accident on her way home, it is Crumb who comes to the rescue. The illustrations are hilarious as Miss Hazeltine trains her cats and as they save her. My favorite one is the cats all in a line in the dark with glowing eyes.
