Book review: The Things I Can Do, by Jeff Mack

Mack, Jeff. The Things I Can Do. Roaring Brook Press, 2015. Unp. $17.99. ISBN: 978-1-59643-675-6. Ages 4-8. P8 Q10

Mack Things I Can DoA story from a child’s perspective. The writing is in large, hand-written black crayon, so immediately the reader is mesmerized by the writing in language (both typographical and linguistically) at their level. Kids can identify with the words and pictures. The pictures are photographed multimedia collage of the unique combinations of drawings, magazine cut outs, tape, stickers, torn paper, fibers and real life objects combined to capture the imagination artfully. It’s fun and the book teaches the child personal autonomy, confidence, and self-care with creativity and bouncy enthusiasm. Recommended for all fans of collage and early children’s literature. It’s fun, childish and playful.
