Stone, Oliver & Kuznick, Peter. The Untold History of the United States, Young Readers Edition, 1898-1945, Volume 1. Adapted by Susan Campbell Bartoletti. $19.99. ISBN 9781481421737. 383 pgs. Ages 10+. P7Q8.

Stone Untold History of the United StatesThis liberal, progressive take on American history is an adaptation of a book for adults. It isn’t trying to be a comprehensive look at American history during this period. Instead, the authors chose important moments and tell the hard truth about American actions. I think this book would be an excellent supplement and counterpoint to any comprehensive core text book in history. The authors have given us a “fresh look at the American empire and national security state,” as stated in the book jacket, and have done a great job of telling the truth about events in US history that have been traditionally whitewashed in history textbooks. The writing is scholarly but readable and enjoyable to read. The illustrations are black and white photographs and reproductions of documents. At the end, there is a timeline of events and an index.
