Book review: The Most Amazing Creature in the Sea, by Brenda Guiberson, illustrated by Gennady Spirin

Guiberson, Brenda. The Most Amazing Creature in the Sea. Illustrated by Gennady Spirin. Henry Holt and Company, 2015. $17.99. ISBN 9780805099614. Unpaged. Ages 4-8. P8Q9.

Guiberson Most Amazing Creature in the SeaI love this gorgeous, fascinating book. It goes through a number of sea creatures including the box jelly, the vampire squid, the barreleye fish, the mimic octopus, the anglerfish, the hagfish, etc. Each spread has a beautiful illustration and collection of fascinating information. Did you know that male anglerfish merge their bodies with females, sharing nutrients, and even eyesight! Each spread ends with the sentence, “That’s why I am the most amazing creature in the sea!” At the end of the book, the author’s note talks about the interdependence of the creatures in the book, and how if they disappear, the others and the whole ecosystem will suffer, I think this book would be useful for classroom teachers teaching about ecology and threatened species, and public libraries will find families and children who are fascinated.
