Chang, Victoria. Illustrated by Marla Frazee. Is Mommy? Beach Lane Books, 2015. $15.99. ISBN 978-1-4814-0292-7. Unp. Ages 1-4. P7 Q8
The story starts by asking “Is Mommy what?” I’m not sure I like when they don’t use proper grammar. This book only has a few words and simple pictures. The little girl is saying her mom is ugly, short, mean, etc. But she loves her mother anyway. This story really doesn’t teach respect for your mother but maybe children will see it as funny.
December 2015 review by Melinda Dye.
[Editor’s note: This picture book is not for insecure adults. When a toddler is asked a series of questions about a mother’s traits, the toddler’s honesty and rebellious humor come to the fore, answering that the mother is short, ugly, mean, etc. The final answer affirms the toddler’s love for mommy. Minimal text and simple, colorful illustrations carry a story that toddlers will enjoy over and over again. Adults should definitely read the story first, before presenting it as a bedtime or storytime treat.]
