Book review: Willy’s Stories, by Anthony Browne

Browne, Anthony. Willy’s Stories. Candlewick. 2015. $16.99. unp. 978-0-7636-7761-9. Ages 4-7. P9Q9

Browne Willys StoriesAnthony Browne introduced a young chimpanzee in Willy the Wimp.  Now, thirty years later, Browne celebrates Willy’s birthday with Willy stepping through a series of doors into new adventures, starting every two pages. Willy falls down a rabbit hole, gets shipwrecked, and has other experiences related to classic stories and fairy tales such as Rapunzel and Robinson Crusoe, shown by the stack of books that Willy carries in the last illustration. Adults can invite young readers to guess what happens after the brief introduction to the different stories, especially effective if they have not read the original. Browne was Britain’s Children’s Laureate from 2009-2011.
