Book review: Child Convicts, by Net Brennan

Brennan, Net. Child Convicts. Candlewick, 2015. $16.99. 29p. 978-0-7636-7326-0. Ages 8-10. P5Q8

Brennan Child ConvictsThe import covers the development of the Australia with about 162,000 convicts, concentrating on the children as young as seven who were sent there from England in the 18th and 19th centuries, often because of minor crimes. Some of these were executed for more crimes in their new country while others rose to achievement because of hard work and fortune. Pencil illustrations enhance a text showing the famine, punishment, violence, and cannibalism that they experienced. The Australian bibliography and content may be of less interest to children in the U.S.
