Book review: Austin, Lost in America, by Jef Czekaj

Czekaj, Jef. Austin, Lost in America: a Geography Adventure. Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins, 2015. unp. $17.99. ISBN:978-0-06-228017-6. Gr. 2+. P7 Q8

Czekaj AustinYears ago, when I taught geography to high school students, I was surprised that there were some who did not know some of the states in America. I was excited to see this book about Austin, who travels to all the states, though sometimes in a roundabout way. Austin, a young puppy, has never had a home and wants to find one. Escaping from the pet store with the aid of his fellow creatures and a handy map, he crisscrosses America looking for his home. The message that I gathered from this story is “home is really where your family is” and the message is conveyed in the final pages of the book. The brightly colored illustrations of the states and Austin will delight all who read Austin’s adventures. The book includes facts about each state.
