Book review: Welcome Home, Bear, by Il Sung Na

Na, Il Sung. Welcome Home, Bear: A Book of Animal Habitats. Alfred A. Knopf, 2015. unp. $16.99. ISBN:978-0-385-7575-3. Gr. K+. P8 Q8

Na Welcome Home BearAs a young girl I couldn’t wait for school to end for the summer so that we could leave and head back to where I was born, Jackson, Wyoming. Then when I got there and the summer was coming to an end I wanted to be back here. When I first read this book I instantly remembered how I felt as a young girl yearning to be somewhere else. Bear too dreams of being somewhere other than his home and so he leaves to find himself another home. His trek through the woods leads him to his animal friends and their homes and habitats, each different, but not what he wants. What Bear learns is that his home is after all just perfect for him. The illustrations are painterly textures with digitally generated layers which makes the bear’s adventure through the many different habitats a visual kaleidoscope of colors.
