Book review: I, Fly. by Bridget Heos, illustrated by Jennifer Plecas

Heos, Bridget. I, Fly. Illustrated by Jennifer Plecas. Henry Holt and Company, LLC. 2015. Unp. $17.99. 9780805094695. Ages 5-2nd grade. Q6 P7.

Heos I FlyThe fly we meet in I, Fly attempts to convince a science class to study houseflies instead of boring old butterflies. Our fly protagonist, with his pleading eyebrows, shares plenty of fly trivia with the class; including anatomy, behavior, life cycle, benefits to science, and common misconceptions. The fly is realistic and doesn’t leave out all the more repulsive facts. The illustrations are simple and informative if not scientifically accurate. The inclusion of a glossary at the back of the book is helpful; however, some of the defined words don’t appear in the text of the book. I, Fly is a good alternative to books about more popular insects.
