Book review: The Secrets We Keep, by Trisha Leaver

Leaver, Trisha. The secrets we keep. Farrar Straus Giroux, 2015. 294 pgs. $17.99. ISBN: 978-0-374-30046-3. Gr. 7+. P8 Q8

Leaver Secrets We KeepI have twin cousins, a boy and a girl, who I have enjoyed seeing grow up into the amazing adults that they are today. Ella and Maddy Lawson are identical twins who have done everything together all their lives. They stick together through everything and even finish each other’s thoughts. On the first day of high school everything changes. Maddy, joins the popular students at lunch and introduces Ella to a Josh, a boy in her new group. Josh and Ella become close friends and enjoy art and manga literature. Maddy becomes popular and seems to ditch Ella for her new friends. As Maddy makes wrong choices that get her into trouble it is usually Ella who comes to her rescue. One night a phone call and an argument, while rescuing Maddy leads to a car wreck that kills Maddy. Ella tries to make everything up to Maddy by taking her place and continuing her life for her. Guilt can make us do what we perceive to be the right thing only to discover that it really the wrong thing. The story is a journey of discovery for Ella who comes to see her true worth to both her family and friends.
