Book review: The Novice, by Taran Matharu

Matharu, Taran. The novice. (Summoner series, book 1) Feiwel and Friends, 2015. 355 pgs. $18.9. ISBN:978-1-250-06712-8. Gr. 7+. P8 Q8

Matharu The NoviceThis is the first book in a new series that has all the elements that I love in a great fantasy, demons, magic, a war between good and evil and great well developed characters. Fletcher is driven from his home and his adoptive parent, a blacksmith, when his new found demon almost murders the local rich boy, Didric Cavell. Chased by Pinkerton men and dogs Fletcher escapes and make his way to the city that holds the “Academy of Magic.” Here he is taken in and learns how to deal with his demon and how to perform magic. Others, a dwarf and fey have also been admitted to the academy for the first time and it is Fletcher who befriends them and accepts them, while others do not. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.
