Book review: Pool, by JiHyeon Lee

Lee, JiHyeon. Pool. Chronicle. 2015. $16.99. unp. 978-1-4521-4294-4. Ages 3-7. P8Q8

Lee PoolSoft-colored pencils and oil pastels provide the story for this wordless book about two shy children who meet in a pool filled with surrealistic sea creatures. Their adventures forge a bond between the boy and girl through their common understanding of the experience. As the children explore, the colors become more vibrant and change hues; i.e., the boy’s trunks change from gray to bright blue, and the girl’s suit is bright red. Dive deep into life, the debut from a South Korean illustrator seems to say.
