Book review: Playful Pigs: From A to Z, by Anita Lobel

Lobel, Anita. Playful Pigs: From A to Z. Knopf. 2015. $16.99. unp. 9780553508321. Ages 2-4. P8Q5

Lobel Playful PigsSet against a bucolic setting, each pig plays with the letter that starts his or her last name in a book that could have come out of last century with its lack of ethnic diversity. In the gouache and watercolor illustrations, clothing for each gender is stereotypic. Costumes of artist, clown, sailor, etc. are entertaining, and lower left corners of the pages include a fruit or flower starting with the same letter as the pigs. The alphabet appears twice on each page, once in upper case and the other in lower. Charming and adorable, but very Eurocentric.
