Book review: Nimona, by Noelle Stevenson

Stevenson, Noelle. Nimona. HarperTeen. 2015. $17.99. 266p. 978-0-06-227823-4. Ages 12-15. P8Q8

Stevenson NimonaExplosions, sharks, dragons, sword-and-sorcery, and science are just a part of this combination of heroics and villainy as Lord Ballister Blackheart and sidekick Nimona set out to prove that Sir Anbrosius Goldenloin and his colleagues at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics are just the opposite of what they claim to be. The setting is a mix of medieval and high-tech societies reflect the current refusal to accept scientific reasoning and rational thought. Full-color illustrations of Nimona as innocent contrast with the villain-in-training’s energetic impish nature, and the comedy comes with clever touches. Originally a webcomic, this collection of biweekly entries demonstrates the artist’s progression from student to accomplished artist. Playful but at the same time intense.
