Meyer, Carolyn. Miss Patch’s Learn to Sew Book. Illustrated by Mary Suzuki. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 1969/2014. $9.99. ISBN 9780544339057. 90 pgs. Ages 6-9. P6Q8
This book was originally published in 1969 and has a retro feeling to it. Simple projects like pillows, bags, and doll clothes walk the reader through basic sewing skills. The basic directions and illustrations will be a good introduction to a child who wants to learn hand sewing. Something I like about this book is that the author doesn’t caution the reader to have an adult present for cutting or using sharp tools. This may sound strange, but I sometimes find overzealous warnings to be condescending to kids- they are normally bright enough to understand that scissors are sharp! I also like a book that teaches a basic, important skill that many children (and adults) don’t have these days.
