Book review: There Was an Old Dragon: Who Swallowed a Knight, by Penny Parker Klosterman, illustrated by Ben Mantle

Klosterman, Penny Parker. There Was an Old Dragon: Who Swallowed a Knight. Il. by Ben Mantle. Random House. 2015. $16.99. unp. 978-0-385-39080-4. Ages 3-7. P9Q9

Klosterman There Was an Old DragonThis debut story, obviously a take-off on the old lady swallowing a fly, is far more amusing with whimsical illustrations, fun puns, and medieval vocabulary such as steed, squire, savory, tassel, and moat. The brightly-colored images of medieval characters—and a castle!—in the dragon’s stomach will bring laughs, especially in a read-aloud session. Details of this telling include the dragon picking his teeth with the knight’s sword after swallowing the poor creature and the steed clippity-clopping. And the rhymes work!
