Book review: Over in the Wetlands: A Hurricane-on-the-Bayou Story, by Caroline Starr Rose, illustrated by Rob Dunlavey

Rose, Caroline Starr. Over in the Wetlands: A Hurricane-on-the-Bayou Story. Il. Rob Dunlavey. Schwartz & Wade. 2015. $17.99. unp. 978-0-449-81016-3. Ages 4-7. P10Q10

Rose Over in the WetlandsA calm day in the bayou changes to a storm and then moves back to the peaceful night as rhyming text and watercolor, ink, paint, and collage show animals preparing for the weather’s assault and then enjoying the aftermath. Rose adapts the counting rhyme “Over in the Meadow” in her first picture book. The poetic view of the natural world finishes with notes describing the way that human activity threatens and damages the wetlands. Also included are facts about the animals incorporated in the book. Absolutely beautiful—a must.
