Book review: Mistakes Were Made, by Stephan Pastis

Pastis, Stephan. Mistakes were Made. (Timmy Failure series, #1) Candlewick Press, 2015. $7.99. ISBN 978-0-7636-6927-0. 293 pgs. Ages 8-12. P8Q8

Pastis Mistakes Were MadeTimmy Failure is an amateur detective, but he loses his mom’s Segway. He and his partner, a polar bear named Total, set out to find the Segway and some missing candy. His arch-nemesis is Corrina, Corrina!, whom the partners are sure stole the Segway. The book is a funny adventure of the troubles they get into trying to solve the mystery.

This book is wonderful! It has a great cast of characters, besides the ones mentioned above there is also mom’s boyfriend, Crispin Flavius, (sounds like a Roman senator), Timmy calls him “the bowling turkey”. He loves to eat raisins, ALL the time. Besides the book and the fun antics of Timmy and Total Failure, there is a website, www.timmyfailure.com, with games, downloadables, activities, a blog and a lot more…at least enough to keep kids reading and looking forward to the next Timmy installment.

[Editor’s note: Stephan Pastis is the cartoonist behind Pearls Before Swine.]
