Book review: If Kids Ran the World, by Leo and Diane Dillon

Dillon, Leo and Diane Dillon. If Kids Ran the World. The Blue Sky Press, an imprint of Scholastic INC, 2014. $18.99. 9780545441964. Unp. Ages 4-8. P6 Q7

Dillon If Kids Ran the WorldThe final work of Leo and Diane Dillon describes how society would operate if children ran the world. I wanted to enjoy this book because I have always loved the authors’ illustrations. Unfortunately, this book struck me as a little too idealistic. The message is impractically great. It is meant to empower children to mimic those in the book, but the bar is set too high. The authors seem to acknowledge this by including a section in the back about what actual kids are doing to make the world a better place. They also make suggestions for how readers can make a difference in their communities. Overall, the message is a little strong. I had high expectations for the illustrations as well. They were much simpler than I expected to see from the Dillons.
