Roy, Katherine. Neighborhood sharks: hunting with the great whites of California’s Farallon Islands. David Macaulay Studio/Roaring Book Press, 2014. unp. $17.99 ISBN:978-1-59643-874-3 Gr. 4+. P8Q8
The illustrations in this book are done by the author which show the Farallon Islands, and the animals which inhabit them. First the seals land on the islands and the sharks follow to prey on the seals, as they dive in and out of the water. The shark’s anatomy is presented as well as how researchers are tagging the sharks to study. A good introduction for younger students who are studying sharks. February 2015 review by Carol Bernardi.
[Editor’s note: One of the 2015 Robert F. Sibert Informational Book Award honor books, Neighborhood Sharks describes the great white sharks and the marine ecosystem off the Farallon Islands, a nature reserve some 30 miles away from San Francisco. Each fall, the huge predators migrate to the islands to hunt the seals that shelter on the rocky islands. Roy’s illustrations are based on her observations of a team of scientists studying the sharks in 2012.]
