Book review: How to Grow a Friend, by Sara Gillingham

Gillingham, Sara. How to Grow a Friend. Random House, 2015. $16.99. 9780385376693. Unp. Ages 3-1st. P7 Q8

Gillingham How to Grow a FriendHow to Grow a Friend uses a gardening metaphor to teach readers that friendships are lovingly grown and nurtured. The illustrations are quite graphically stylized; it is not surprising that the author has her own design firm. I have spied a similar collage style that seems prevalent among picture books this spring. It is colorful and easily representational for younger readers. Older readers will be challenged to work out the figurative language and how a flower garden translates to a “garden of friends”.
