Book review: Little Author in the Big Woods: A Biography of Laura Ingalls Wilde

McDonough, Yona Zeldis. Little Author in the Big Woods: A Biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder. Ill. Jennifer Thermes. Christy Ottaviano/Holt. 2014. $16.99. 156p. 978-0-8050-9542-5. Ages 9-12. P5Q6

In the same gentle language of Wilder’s Little House series, McDonough describes the author’s life as she moved with her family from place to place. Anyone who has read the series will find many of the stories familiar, but with  additional information about her work with daughter Rose to write, edit, and publish the books. The biography concludes with some of Wilder’s quotes, bibliography, and recipes. The pencil drawings are reminiscent of Garth Williams’ in Wilder’s books. On the up side, the book emphasizes literacy for girls, but on the down side, the text is rather ordinary. Readers who love the Little House books will appreciate this added information.
