Book review: Papa is a poet

Bober, Natalie S. Papa Is a Poet: A Story about Robert Frost. Illus. Rebecca Gibbon. Christy Ottaviano/Holt, 2013. $17.99. unp. 978-0-8050-9407-7. Ages 4-8. P7Q7

The famous poet’s oldest daughter, 15-year-old Lesley, is used as the narrator for this picture book as she remembers the family’s life on their New Hampshire farm. Their activities and scenes, shown in ink, colored pencil, and watercolor, add to the detail. The book can be used as an introduction to the poet’s work; pieces of Frost’s poetry combine with the first-person narration, and 12 of his poems are in the back matter as are historical information, quotations, and bibliography. Older readers may be interested in Bober’s biography, A Restless Spirit: The Story of Robert Frost (1991).
